Google Isn’t Offering Incentive to Develop on Stadia
Google Stadia recently launched with a limited library and according to developers and publishers, there wasn’t enough incentive to put their games on the cloud streaming service. While some developers consider the lack of incentives to be the key problem, some mentioned the lack of stability; with Google dropping out of major services in the past. According to one indie developer, the offer from Google might as well have been non-existent. Google Stadia is a cloud streaming non-console that’s available now but you have to pay $10 per month for access to Stadia Pro content.
Recently, an anonymous game publishing executive was quoted as saying their offer from Google was “so low that it wasn’t even part of the conversation.” Another executive that was less concerned about the financial aspect said, “with Google, it’s easy to look at them as, well, it’s Google. But they’ve failed a ton in the past and walked away from major services.” Considering Google’s record, it’s a likelihood that if Stadia fails to gain traction, these executives have fair reason to worry. A lack of financial incentive is what probably holds the platform back from being packed with indie titles.
The lack of Stadia enthusiasm from the gaming development community continued, with one dev saying there “wasn’t really anything to want us to get in the door other than to be the first on the platform.” With launch titles like Destiny 2 dwindling in player base on the Stadia since launch, it’s no wonder why most developers wouldn’t really care about being among the first on the platform. While cloud streaming may be the future of gaming, Google seems to be sabotaging their own service which prevents it from being a breakout star in the industry.
Did you invest in a Stadia or did you skip their attempt at cloud game streaming? Are you surprised how limited the library is after hearing from these devs? Let us know in the comments below!
