October 2019 Sold 34% Less Games Than October 2018 According to NPD
According to the NPD Group’s October sales records, consumers spent $1.03 billion on games and hardware, down 34% compared to October 2018. While Red Dead Redemption 2 released in October 2018, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare leads the software sales for the month of October, with The Outer Worlds and Luigi’s Mansion 3 rounding out the rest of the top three. Modern Warfare and the Outer Worlds are multi-platform but Luigi’s Mansion 3 is exclusively available for the Nintendo Switch. Apparently, hardware sales are down a significant 41% year on year but the Nintendo Switch remains the most successful in sales.
These are October’s top-20 games according to NPD:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- The Outer Worlds
- Luigi’s Mansion 3
- Madden NFL 20
- NBA 2K20
- Ghost Recon Breakpoint
- WWE 2K20
- FIFA 20
- Borderlands 3
- Ring Fit Adventure
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Minecraft
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Motal Kombat 11
- Overwatch

NPD also compiled a list of 2019’s top ten best sellers:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- NBA 2K20
- Madden NFL 20
- Borderlands 3
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
- Anthem
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Grand Theft Auto V
We aren’t shocked that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold so well as the NPD group already predicted it would be 2019’s best selling title and it was definitely expected the game would carry the month of October. We find it extremely fitting that Luigi’s Mansion sold the third best in the month of October and it’s refreshing to see how many people are still into fitness games with Ring Fit Adventure inching into the top ten. It’s a shock that overall spending on games is so low but we think the release of next-gen will reinvigorate these numbers.
Are you surprised by any of the sales for the month of October or the year of 2019? What’s a game you’ve enjoyed this year that didn’t make the list? Let us know in the comments below!
