The Town of Salem Developers Are Looking Into This Data Breach
Over 7 million accounts for the web browser & mobile roleplaying game Town of Salem have been reportedly breached, according to a Tuesday report on DeHashed.
โThe data affected, includes but is not limited to: usernames, emails, passwords (phpass, MD5(WordPress), MD5(phpBB3)), IP addresses, game & forum activity, & payment information,โ their report read. โWith some of the users who paid for certain premium features having their billing information/data breached as well.โ
A Town of Salem developer on the gameโs official forum apologized on Wednesday for the massive data breach and said that the development studio, Blank Media Games, will work towards resolving this issue.
โThe BMG staff is just coming back from Christmas/New years vacation and we were informed that there may have been a breach of our database,โ the developer wrote. โI am currently in contact with Rackspace to figure out what happened and prevent it from happening again. You should update your Town of Salem passwords to be safe.โ
The developer also said that Blank Media Games doesnโt โstore any credit card or payment infoโ and that all user passwords were โhashed and not plain textโ but they advised changing passwords if users were still worried.
โSorry that this happened, no game creator ever wants to be in this situation and having it happen over the holiday break when everyone was away was terrible timing,โ the developer added.
