The Best Video Game Moment of 2018
***This story contains spoilers***
The narratives in some of the most popular games of this year took us for a ride with emotion, laughter, and awe as we progressed through intricate stories and bonded with our protagonists. We lived the experiences of our heroes, and felt the reverberations of their choices and circumstances. In our Game of the Year awards, we ranked the best video game moments of 2018. Click on the video below to see our top picks.
Our favorite moment of 2018 was releasing the ashes with Kratos and Atreus in God of War. Ending the game not with a boss battle, but with a long, slow trek up the mountain gave proper closure to the story. The moment where the two release the ashes into the wind together is timed with the ethereal music perfectly, and the emotion that comes through hits you right in the heart.
In second place, we ranked Peter’s choice at the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man. The moment was heartbreaking and unexpected, and the choice Peter had to make between saving Aunt May and the greater population is one that we knew he had to make, though that didn’t make it any less difficult. Some of our other favorite moments include experiencing the camp and getting tanked with Lenny in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Deimos’ reveal in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
