It’s Been an Odyssey to Get Here
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has had the best launch week of any franchise installment from this generation, according to Ubisoft. That’s saying a lot since, if you count Black Flag, there have been a total of five major launches.
After the sales decrease with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft finally decided to change the formula. What we got was Assassin’s Creed Origins, a revamped open world that played more with the lore. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has gone a bit farther off the rails, set in Ancient Greece—so far back in time that it feels untethered to the original storyline. With so much to do, so many modes of play, and the new option to choose gender, it seems the Quebec-based publisher/developer has captured something close to lightning in a bottle.
We are incredibly proud of what the team accomplished with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and humbled by the amazing reception from critics and players,” said Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Geoffroy Sardin in a press release. “Based on the quality of the game and the very encouraging reactions from players, we expect Odyssey to be one of the top performing Assassin’s Creed games of all-time. Launch is just the start of this epic journey. We have robust content plans for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that will keep players engaged and exploring the game’s beautiful and compelling world for a long time to come.”
While Ubisoft has crowned Odyssey their top seller in a single week, they haven’t revealed any official numbers. They might publish sales figures for the 5-day period, eventually. Until then, no game is likely to outsell Assassin’s Creed this month. Unless, of course, you count Red Dead Redemption 2 which will launch near the end of October. As a matter of fact, Rockstar’s game will have no fewer than five days to claim the month’s top numbers. Time will tell.
