Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series Episode 4 Review

Continuing on from what may have been the weakest episode thus far, Episode 4 of Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series, Who Needs You is perhaps the strongest episode so far. While the penultimate episode is relatively light on the action and main plotline, the focus on the characters is gripping and impressive. While the series has been a solid Telltale series, Who Needs You is setting up Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series to potentially be one of its better entries.

For those reading this review without previously experiencing the first three episodes of the series, Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series follows Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians on an all new journey surrounding an ancient, powerful artifact known as the Eternity Forge. The story is original, but is not tied to the recent films. For those continuing on from Episode 3, Episode 4 picks off right where you left off, and promptly knocks you off of the main plot’s course.

Despite not continuing on with the main story, Who Needs You excels because of its focus on the interactions and relationships between the Guardians. The episode has a healthy mix of light-hearted and serious moments that showcase the team as a whole. In addition to featuring the dynamics of the team, Drax being the center of attention for parts of the episode were simply a delight. Specifically, his flashback is both interesting as well as enlightening, and the episode helps to provide valuable insight into his character.

In typical Telltale fashion, Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series features some very familiar gameplay elements, and Episode 4 is no different. While there are some solid action sequences in the game, players should expect plenty of quick time events that bridge the narrative portions together. Technically speaking, I ran into a few graphical hitches but nothing major. While the gameplay and graphics as a whole were okay, the game would benefit greatly with a wider variety of action sequences and perhaps a new engine.

On the other hand, the soundtrack and audio of Episode 4 were well done. As a whole, Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series features solid audio from the soundtrack to the voice acting. Episode 4 simply continues this trend with appropriate music in certain sections as well as the always appreciated full voice acting.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series turns the series around from perhaps its weakest episode to perhaps its strongest. With a refocus on the dynamics of the Guardians as a team rather than the main plot line, Telltale appears to have repositioned themselves into a better perspective with which to enter the final act. With this episode, we can also begin to see how certain plotlines are coming together now that we near the end. We expect some great things from the final episode, perhaps aptly named Don’t Stop Believin’.
