3 Things We Love (and Hate) About Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

3 Up, 3 Down – Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands Closed Beta Edition

The Ghost Recon Wildlands closed beta took place over the last weekend and we had the opportunity to dive in and go hands on. The latest in the Ghost Recon franchise, Wildlands is the first Ghost Recon to feature an open world. Ubisoft has employed an open world in many of their games, and described Wildlands as one of their largest open worlds, with 21 regions. The closed beta only allows access to 1, but should be representative of the general gameplay of the title. Here are three things we loved and hated about the Ghost Recon Wildlands Closed Beta.

3 Things We Loved

Character Customization

When I first hopped into the Ghost Recon Wildlands closed beta, I created a character very reminiscent of Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid 5. Although customizing a character’s facial nuances such as depth of nose, eyebrows, and the like were missing, the game offers enough to make your character stand out. While I made a typical badass at the outset of my adventure into Bolivia, I soon found myself rocking various outfits including dressing up as a visiting tourist, as a war journalist, and in a ghillie suit. The customization can result in some hilarious teams, and I cannot wait to hopefully see more options when the game releases.

Combat

Whether sneaking up in an enemy base and taking out soldiers via stealth melee kills or seeing the red mist spew from an enemy as you hit an oh so satisfying sniper shot, Ghost Recon Wildlands features some very satisfying combat. Is the combat ultra refined with great mechanics? Simply put, no. Where the combat shines is that it is just fun. Throwing up a drone and tagging enemies before clearing a compound or just driving straight in are just two of the strategies I employed. Although I entered the Beta by myself, I am sure that the combat will be just as fun, if not even more enjoyable, with three friends.

Vehicle Variety

The variety of vehicles in Ghost Recon Wildlands is nothing short of impressive. Of course, players can utilize the typical vehicles such as jeeps, helicopters, and motorbikes, but civilian vehicles, boats, sports cars, and even tractors were available to use in traversing the massive open world. The Beta was limited to just one of the twenty-one areas of the game. Hopefully, we will see different types of vehicles depending on the area, such as the potential for snowmobiles in the mountainous regions. Regardless, traversing the regions on bikes, jeeps, pickup trucks and like is sure to result in fun times.
