I Am Plague Turns Thousands of Rats Into an Unstoppable Horde

Become the Leader of Rats in I Am Plague

Digital Vortex and developer Greedy Games have unveiled I Am Plague, a dark incremental roguelite that puts players in control of a growing swarm of rats determined to conquer a massive underground fortress. Alongside the reveal, the developers have launched an open playtest on PC via Steam, running through October 19.

In I Am Plague, players take on the role of a hive mind controlling thousands of rats that have survived for centuries beneath humanity’s capital. What begins as a fragile colony must gradually evolve into a devastating swarm capable of overwhelming everything.

The game features more than 200 levels filled with enemies to defeat and consume. Combat plays out automatically, while players focus on developing their swarm through a wide range of mutations and abilities. Rats can inflict status effects with their attacks, gain health by consuming defeated enemies, and develop protective bone armor.

Players can also collect skulls to unlock Visages, which effectively change the swarm’s class and provide access to new abilities. Combining these mechanics will allow players to experiment with different builds and create increasingly powerful pestilential synergies.

Death is part of the progression. Failed runs allow players to return to their lair and make offerings to the Tree of Flesh and Tree of Bones. It will permanently improve the colony and unlock additional mutations.

With its unusual premise, dark aesthetic, and extensive build customization, I Am Plague offers a distinctive spin on the roguelite formula. The open playtest is now available on Steam, giving players a chance to lead their own growing plague.
