Traverse Through Different Realms in Akatori
Contrast Games has officially revealed the global launch dates for Akatori, its upcoming 2.5D metroidvania that puts fast-paced movement and fluid combat at the heart of the experience. Following a well-received Steam demo, the game is finally ready to make its debut across multiple platforms, with PC players getting first access on August 5.
Akatori will launch on Steam for PC on August 5, 2026, followed by PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on August 12. A version for Nintendo Switch 2 is also in development and is aiming to release next year.
In Akatori, players step into the role of Mako, a young monk raised in the Firebird Temple. Her journey takes her across interconnected realms as she fights to stop the mysterious Amber Storms, a corrupting force spreading across the world. Along the way, she is joined by a mysterious red bird sealed within her staff, uncovering secrets behind the growing darkness through exploration and story-driven encounters.
The mystical staff serves as the game’s defining feature, functioning as both a weapon and a traversal tool. Players can chain together ground and aerial attacks, throw and recall the staff during combat, and use it to glide, wall-hook, slide, and parkour through expansive vertical environments.
Combat also extends beyond simple battles. Enemies interact with their surroundings, trigger traps, and respond to environmental hazards, encouraging players to adapt their strategies instead of relying on brute force.
With its stylish movement, exploration-focused gameplay, and action-packed combat, Akatori is shaping up to be one of the more promising metroidvania releases to watch out for next month.
