Mewts Is Launching a Public Playtest Next Week

Brawl as Silly Creatures in Mewts

The indie studio Shelter will open the first public playtest for Mewts on Steam on December 12. This marks the moment when players can finally try the top-down party game with friends and share impressions that will guide the final stages of development. The official trailer provides a glimpse into the cheerful tone and fast-paced action that define the experience.

Mewts is a lighthearted multiplayer party title for up to four players. Everyone controls stretchy worm-like creatures that can grab both ends of their bodies, pull themselves into long shapes, and launch objects or each other with surprising force. The movement feels physical and playful, which matches the game’s distinctive visual style. Every asset began as a real clay model or a stop-motion animation before being reproduced as three-dimensional art, giving the world a handmade charm that feels lively and tactile.

The game focuses on competitive modes that mix simple rules with steady doses of chaos. The creatures wobble, flop, and collide in unpredictable ways, creating moments that blend strategy with slapstick energy. Whether players are sitting side by side or playing online from different places, matches move quickly and encourage creative use of each character’s flexibility.

Several modes highlight the game. Slingball centers on guiding a ball into a goal while stretching and disrupting opponents. Brawl turns the arena into a direct contest of messy clashes. King of the Hill rewards those who hold control the longest while everyone else attempts to interrupt them. Race combines movement challenges with the usual physical jostling. Greedy Mewts divides players into teams that try to collect and steal as many balls as possible.

Shelter intends the playtest to introduce players to the full range of these ideas and gather insight as the studio prepares for the official release.
