A Guardian’s Farewell by Bungie
Bungie has added a heartwarming tribute to the late developer Cory Barron in the latest update of Destiny 2. He worked on both the original title Destiny and the sequel Destiny 2.
Barron was a part of Bungie for more than eight years. He first joined the team in 2015 as a Senior Technical UI/UX Designer for Destiny. Then we eventually moved forward to the sequel in 2019. He contributed to the industry-leading UI for the game.
In a sad turn of events, Barron was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 2022. He passed away six weeks after that. While he may have departed, his legacy continues to endure. Bungie, in a touching gesture, has paid homage to his memory within the very game he dedicated himself to.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the latest update for Destiny 2 was released and they added an in-game tribute to Barron. Within Destiny 2’s Director map, under the Destinations tab, a column of dots gracefully descends on the right-hand side of the screen.
In fact, these constitute a binary code that, when deciphered, forms the name “Cory Barron.” The solid diamonds symbolize 1s, while the vacant ones symbolize 0s. The code is provided below-
“01000011 01101111 01110010 01111001 00100000 01000010 01100001 01110010 01110010 01101111 01101110”
Barron worked at Sony Santa Monica before joining Bungie. Here, he contributed to the development of many God of War games.
We cannot deny that it is very emotional to see such a gesture from Bungie. His legacy will live on through his work. Above all, it is pleasant to know that he will be remembered and honored by the entire gaming industry. Rest in peace our guardian Cory Baron.
