Elden Ring Is 2022’s ‘Best-Selling Game in US,’ Says NPD Analyst

Elden Ring Is Dominating Sales in US Gaming. Market

Elden Ring will reportedly finish 2022 as the “best-selling premium game in the US” gaming market. It would seem that the game keeps going head to head with Call of Duty titles.

Elden Ring will finish as 2022’s best-selling premium game in the US market,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella announced. “Marking only the 3rd time since 2009 that a Call of Duty franchise release does not lead the market.”

The game launched to the gaming public on February 25th. Publisher Bandai Namco says it was able to sell 13.4 million units worldwide. And this only in just a little over a month since launch. Moreover, NPD also confirmed just this April that Elden Ring completely overtook Call of Duty: Vanguard as the US market’s best-selling game for the past year.

Still, despite Elden Ring’s dominance in this year’s gaming market, Piscatella says that “Call of Duty will remain the US market’s best-selling premium gaming franchise for a record 14th consecutive year.”

He also shared the other top premium games of the year. They are Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Gotham Knights, God of War: Ragnarok, Madden NFL 23, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Horizon: Forbidden West, NBA 2K23, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

“This is, of course, pending changes to assumed release timing for announced games and any surprise releases the market may see,” he continued.

With regards to hardware, NPD is predicting that Switch will lead console unit sales this year. “Switch will lead 2022 console hardware in units sold with dollar leadership a too-close-to-call race between Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series,” he said.

“We are living in interesting times,” Piscatella added. “The return of experiential spending and higher pricing in everyday spending categories appear to be impacting the space.”
