Sony Supports Crossplay in Borderlands 3 on PS4 and PS5… Finally

Too Little, Too Late?

Remember when Borderlands 3 came out, three years ago? Do you remember when its DLC was coming out every few months? How about when its second season pass was released? It all seems like a long time ago… because it kind of was. Video games age pretty fast.

Now that Gearbox’s new game Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is coming out, guess what? Borderlands 3 is finally getting full crossplay across all platforms! It was about nine months ago that crossplay was enabled between Xbox, PC, and Stadia, however PlayStation had decided against it.

Borderlands 3 Director's Cut

Earlier this week, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands would launch with full crossplay support. When asked if Borderlands 3 would also get crossplay, he said, “The future addition of PlayStation to crossplay for BL3 is now what I would consider to be inevitable.

When crossplay in Borderlands 3 initially launched, 2K and Sony were in disagreement with Sony’s crossplay policies. It is unclear what caused the turnaround now. Did Sony let up on their policy or did 2K give in and pay the crossplay fee? If 2K is paying, there may be more crossplay news coming to other 2K games. Better still, if Sony is relaxing its policy, even more titles might see similar about-faces.

Borderlands 3 is still doing regular mini-events, such as event revivals, so there are either dedicated players or new ones popping in. Hopefully, friends between Xbox and PlayStation families will jump in and play together, like the Montegues and Capulets. They have a happy ending, right?

There is currently no launch date for crossplay in BL3. Borderlands 3 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia.
