These two cult hits are known in Japan as Mother and Mother 2. EarthBound is the second title in the popular JRPG series. It follows Ness with his baseball bat as he takes on a mission of beating the powerful alien Giygas. Ness also made an appearance in Super Smash Bros.

Join Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo in their quest to fulfill an age-old prophecy to stop the wicked Giygas in the fan favorite Super NES classic EarthBound,” the devs wrote in their PR piece. “Both EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings are coming to Nintendo Switch Online later today!

EarthBound Beginnings launched in 1989. Devs then released the sequel in 1994. EarthBound became more popular for its quirky back story and relatively offbeat characters. In this adventure, players need to go against upset shoppers and arcade bullies.

Prior to the presentation, series Creator Shigesato Itoi teased fans about a reveal. It was because of his cryptic tease that fans started to speculate about an imminent release of the much-awaited third game.

Since the original launch, the franchise has grown a very dedicated following. In fact, devs re-released the game multiple times. Fans of the series have long been clamoring for a third installment. Unfortunately, the presentation did not include such news. To date, these demands have remained unanswered. The devs’ silence regarding Mother 3 has escalated the would-be game to an almost mythical status among Nintendo die-hard fans.
