Smash Bros. Director ‘Can’t Say That This Is Definitely the Last’ of Series

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai Is Undecided About the Franchise’s Future

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC schedule was previously revealed to be complete, but it looks like Director Masahiro Sakurai is undecided about the future of the series.

I am not thinking about a sequel,” Sakurai said in an interview. “But, I cannot say that this is definitely the last Smash Bros.”

Just last month, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received its final DLC character through Sora from the Kingdom Hearts games. Sora was to be the games final add-on fighter, and his addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate split fans about whether or not it was a good choice. Nevertheless, many players were satisfied about the big-shoed hero being added to the game’s roster of combatants.

Clearly, Sakurai and Nintendo have a lot to talk about considering that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been regarded as a bestseller for the company since its official launch to the gaming market. However, if there would be another Smash Bros. project, Sakurai believes that it will not be the same without him.

I cannot see any way to produce Smash Bros. without me,” he continued. “To be honest, I would like to leave it to someone else—and I have actually tried that, but it has not worked out.” It remains unknown precisely why Sakurai wants to hand the franchise off to someone else, but it has been reported that he wants to be in the shadows for a while and that he will not be able to say what he is going to work on next.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has become so large since its launch that Sakurai is worried about “disappointing the users” should the studio decide to continue with the series. “If we are going to continue with the series, Nintendo and I need to discuss and seriously consider how to make it a success,” he added.
