Krafton Inc. Have Acquired Unknown Worlds, The Developers Behind Subnautica
Krafton Inc. is a company that endeavors to build immersive worlds through video games, their preferred medium, and have successfully done so across various titles such as PUGB: Battlegrounds, a premium battle royale title, along with Tera and Elyon, which are both MMORPGs. The company intends to further its plans and has officially announced the acquisition of Unknown Worlds, the development team behind Subnautica and Natural Selection. This decision is based upon the company’s intention to invest in top-tier talent that will innovate and produce quality video games. Unknown Worlds becomes Krafton’s sixth independent studio.
CH Kim, CEO of Krafton, was pleased with the acquisition, stating, “Unknown Worlds are incredibly skilled and passionate developers with an unparalleled gift for creativity and a proven track record of building successful player-driven worlds…KRAFTON will spare no effort in helping them. Not only do they enhance our development capabilities, but we share a goal of creating unique experiences for global audiences.”
Charlie Cleveland, CEO of Unknown Worlds, is excited for the future, stating, “Subnautica and PUBG both started humbly and evolved successfully through constant iteration and feedback. We want to bring new games to the world stage – and with KRAFTON, we’re a big step closer. We’re truly looking forward to our future together.”
The release confirmed that Unknown Worlds will retain its employee and leadership structure and that there will be continuing updates for Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. The company has also confirmed that Unknown Worlds is working on a ‘genre-defining’ game that is set to release sometime in 2022.
