Biomutant is Smooth and Beautiful on PS5 and Xbox Series S|X

The Devs Have Been Remarkably Upfront About Cross-Console Performance

Biomutant will be launching next week and Experiment 101 and THQ Nordic are celebrating by giving fans another peek at how the game will play. Specifically, a peek at how it will play on next-gen consoles. These two new videos showcase a total of about 7 minutes of unedited gameplay–about 3 and a half minutes on each console–and the results are, to put it bluntly, stunning. The world of Biomutant was already gorgeous on PS5 and Xbox One, but on the PS5 version you can make out individual blades of grass rustling around and the colors are breathtakingly vivid. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X clip adds a new sense of depth and motion to the game’s world. PS5 and Xbox Series S|X owners should absolutely check these videos out.

Here’s a fact that might blow your minds: only one of these videos has the game running in native 4K. The PS5 footage was captured on a retail copy, running at native 1080p at 60 FPS, which was then upscaled to 4K at 60 FPS using Dynamic Resolution. The build doesn’t even feature an option for native 4K for reasons of stability and performance. And yet it’s still almost painfully gorgeous! This is what happens when devs put their heart and soul into a game, we guess.

The Xbox Series X video is running at native 4k at 60 FPS with Dynamic Resolution, however, and it’s still absolutely stunning. Just look at those flowers wiggle in the breeze. Both versions do a fantastic job of capturing the style of a martial arts movie, so which you prefer might end up being a matter of personal taste. Or which console you already have. You can still buy the plushie no matter what platforms you have available, though.

Biomutant will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 25th, 2021.
