Scarlet Nexus Announces Release Date With a Heart-Pounding Story Trailer

Don’t Take Your Hands Off of The Red Strings

Some games hit exactly the right blend of stylish, surreal, confusing, and meaningful that you can’t look away from them for the life of you. Scarlet Nexus is one of those titles. It hasn’t even come out yet, but every time we spot an update, we have to drop everything and go check it out. Come on, a “brainpunk” future where the advent of psychic powers and a poorly-timed extradimensional invasion led humans down a 90s-inspired retro-futuristic technology tree? What’s not to love there? The only real complaint we’ve had is the lack of focus on plot and characters, and this new story trailer dedicated to exploring Kasane Randall, one of the two protagonists, solves that neatly. It also opens a ton of questions. For example, why is she trying to kill Yuito Sumeragi, the other playable character? How many cool power combinations are there to discover? And what even are these Red Strings?

We now know this much: at some point in the game, our two protagonists will come into conflict. This makes sense for Kasane, who’s introduced as a surly and notorious scout with few friends, but Yuito is meant to be a bright and optimistic recruit from a prestigious family–and he looks up to Kasane, who reminds him of the woman who saved his life. What could Yuito do to get on Kasane’s hit list? Or is it something his family did? Even in surreal psychic futures, the 1% still have the potential to ruin things for everyone.

On a brighter note, Scarlet Nexus has also announced an upcoming anime adaptation produced by Sunrise of Gundam and Love Live! fame. This series will follow Yuito and Kasane as they join the Other Suppression Force, a group of psychics with immense power who fight to defend humanity from the encroaching otherworldly enemy. However, Kasane’s strange dreams and Yuito’s inexperience are about to drive the two of them into conflict. Apparently, even being plugged into each other’s minds isn’t enough to stop people from misunderstanding each other. At least the ride promises to be slick, surreal, and stylish.

Scarlet Nexus will be available on 25th June, 2021 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC. You can preorder it now in Standard, Deluxe, and Guardian editions for an array of extra goodies.
