Resident Evil Village Box Art May Be Hinting at Spoilers

Is Chris Redfield Going to Become a Werewolf?

The Resident Evil franchise doesnโ€™t focus on a single main character, but if we had to pick a single protagonist for this sordid tale of attempted biowarfare and corporate incompetence, it would be Chris Redfield. Weโ€™ve followed him from his days as an idealistic SWAT team officer to rebel against the system to an operative of the BSAA, and the guyโ€™s been through a lot. Heโ€™s weathered the seriesโ€™ shifts from horror to action and back to horror again, so weโ€™re not exactly surprised to find his face on the box art for Resident Evil Village, even if Ethan Winters is supposed to be returning as the playable protagonist. We are, however, surprised to see that Chris seems to be in the middle of transforming into a monstrous wolf. Yeah, hi, Capcom? What does this mean?

Thatโ€™s striking, but itโ€™s far from the only hint that Chris Redfield is going to be a major in Resident Evil Village. The collectorsโ€™ edition comes with a statue of Chris Redfield, although this version of our beloved zombie-killing, boulder-punching hero isnโ€™t looking particularly wolflike. Are the snout and teeth on the cover meant to be taken metaphorically? Will Chris be succumbing to the evil heโ€™s spent his life fighting against? We sure hope not, because the series doesnโ€™t have a great track record with writing downward spirals. On the other hand, it has been confirmed that this game will feature witches, vampires, and werewolves, so maybe Chris will be developing a case of spooky B.O.W. lycanthropy. Weโ€™d be down for that.

Some might argue that Capcom probably wouldnโ€™t plaster a spoiler all over the box art for a game theyโ€™re expecting to be a big hit. To this, we encourage you to think about the many, many big-budget movies that spoiler their twists right in the trailer. Sometimes corporations make mistakes. And isnโ€™t that what Resident Evil is all about? Seriously though, weโ€™re really hoping to see some playable werewolf Chris in the future. What about you?

Resident Evil Village will be available on May 7th, 2021, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There is currently a free demo available for PS5.
