dbrand Are Back in the PS5 Plate Game

Bring it On, Sony

The PS5 is a pretty console, but the unique, futuristic design has caused a couple of problems when it comes to new skins. The curved design has caused a lot of issues for dbrand, who recently went on an expletive-laden rant, insulting consumers and claiming they weren’t interested in selling skins for the PS5 given the number of complaints they’d receive, claiming that customers have difficulty with smartphone screens and wouldn’t be able to deal with the PS5’s size and unique design.

Introducing: PlayStation 5 Faceplates from dbrand

Now, it looks like they’ve decided that while the skins may cause issues, the plates themselves are fair game, and they’ve announced a new series of matte black plates for the console, due to go into production by the end of the year.

The staff member behind the reddit post – presumably (and hopefully) with the backing of the managers – took a bold approach, saying “Sue us, Sony.” They also couldn’t resist getting a sly dig in, stating “If CD Projekt RED has taught us anything, it’s that selling products before they’re finished is a bad idea.” This is a reference, of course, to the catastrophic release of Cyberpunk 2077, which has had a notoriously buggy release following a rocky road to release. To avoid this, dbrand won’t be taking orders until they have the stock in their Toronto headquarters, and anticipate that demand will be higher than supply.

As for the lawsuit they’re inviting, it’s worth remembering that Sony issued a cease and desist notice to another company, Platestation, which was offering custom faceplates, claiming that this was an infringement of their intellectual properties. Given that Sony is one of the largest names in one of the world’s most profitable industries, they must have a lot of confidence in their lawyers to so directly invite legal action.
