Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Unveils a New Trailer

Two Legends Team Up For Another Fantastic Outing

Puyo Puyo and Tetris get together again in this direct sequel to the original Puyo Puyo Tetris. Weโ€™ve been on the edge of our seats ever since the new game was confirmed by Sega, and we couldnโ€™t be more thrilled to share what weโ€™ve learned. Not only will the colorful cast of Puyo Puyoโ€“and the equally colorful cast of humanoid Tetris aliensโ€“be returning in a brand new story mode, itโ€™s been confirmed that weโ€™ll see some all-new characters added to their ranks. At least one of these new arrivals wears a little thundercloud as a hat. Thatโ€™s adorable and we need to know more. The game also promises an array of new challenges, but weโ€™re sure you saw that one coming. After all, whatโ€™s a puzzle game without challenges?

In case you arenโ€™t familiar with one of these iconic puzzle franchises (letโ€™s be honest here, itโ€™s probably Puyo Puyo), hereโ€™s a quick rundown taken from our Puyo Puyo Tetris review:

โ€œTetris requires players to form a complete and full line from one end of the board to the other for the pieces to disappear known as a Tetris Line. Meanwhile, Puyo Puyo requires players to match four or more of the same colour Puyos side by side for them to disappear known as a Puyo Puyo Chain. In both cases, you donโ€™t want the board to overfill causing a game over, but you do want to complete as many Lines or Chains to obtain more points.โ€

Sounds simple, right? Haha, you wish. Both these games are nail-bitingly complex and can be alarmingly fast-paced. Tetris is of course a beloved global classic, but Puyo Puyo has a lot going for it as well. For starters, the entire story presentation has been taken straight from the Puyo Puyo franchise, which has always been heavier on the plot and characterization fronts than Tetris. Whether youโ€™re looking forward to new puzzle gameplay, a new adventure starring all your favorite characters, or both, you have to admit that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is looking so far. Fingers crossed they include alternate voice packs for Amitie, though.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will be released for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on December 8th, 2020. A Steam version will follow at a later date.
