The Realm Beyond is Getting Bigger
Over the past few months, Dead by Daylight has begun eschewing new maps in favor of vast graphical updates on existing ones, as well as the recurring props like lockers, pallets, and generators.
It makes sense. Nobody could have predicted that the game would go on to be one of the greatest multiplayer horror games in gaming history, but some four years has seen it become a veritable juggernaut, with licensed characters from SAW, Silent Hill, and Stranger Things getting included in their own DLC chapters.
Here’s the gist: Four survivors are trapped in a trial with a demented killer, each of which bring their own perks and powers to the table. To escape, survivors need to fix five generators around the map and open the exit gates. The killer, meanwhile, has to take down the survivors, who make up for their lack of powers with teamwork and greater agility.
The new graphical update launches tomorrow, to coincide with the release of the latest DLC chapter, A Binding of Kin, which includes conjoined twins Charlotte and Victor as the killers. Maps getting some love are The Ormond Ski Resort and Autohaven Wreckers. We’ll also see some slight rearrangement of both maps, which will be particularly welcome for killers, since Ormond is often seen as one of the more survivor-sided maps, alongside the Yakahoma Estate and Haddonfield; in the case of Ormond, killers have this opinion due to the high level of obstacles and loops which can be exploited by survivors.
We’re also getting a graphical boost to the totems – small arrangements of skulls and bones around the map through which killers can channel powerful Hex perks, like Ruin – which causes all generators to automatically regress when no longer being repaired – or Haunted Ground – which imposes the Exposed status effect on all survivors when cleansed.
These graphical updates are slowly but surely being rolled out to all maps, but until then we can revel in how gorgeous the new maps are while we wait.
