Xbox Design Lab Announces Hiatus With 2021 Return Date

Customizable Xbox Controllers Are Taking a Break… For Now

Gamers looking to add a personalized Xbox One controller should consider placing their order soon than later as Xbox has announced via Twitter that the service will be (temporarily) unavailable.

Xbox Design Lab was first announced at E3 2016 and allows gamers to personalize and customize their very own Xbox One controller – choosing various colours, patterns, and finishes that suit their style. Gamers looking to take full advantage of the Xbox Design Lab could also have their Gamertag (or whatever they want – up to 16 characters) added to the bottom of the controller for an additional fee; $14.99 CAD.

It is unclear as to exactly why the service will be going on hiatus or for how long; 2021 is the only information that is currently provided. The official Xbox Canada Twitter account sent out the following message stating:

“Xbox Design Lab will be taking a break soon but there’s still time to create your own! Thank you all for sharing your beautiful designs over the years. We’ll miss you Xbox Design Lab but eagerly await your return.”

Those looking to purchase their own Xbox Design Lab controller must do so BEFORE October 14th, 2020 – when the service goes offline. With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles gearing up to launch on November 10th, 2020, it could be that Microsoft is prepping the Xbox Design Lab for the updates Xbox controller which features a slightly different design – including the addition of a SHARE button – similar to that of the current PlayStation 4 controller.

Preorders for the next generation consoles went up on September 22nd, 2020 at 11AM EST and was far from a smooth affair. Between site crashes, extremely limited stock, and obvious bots/scalpers – some fans were left hanging and wondering if they would be able to receive their new Xbox at launch. Microsoft commented about the situation and urged consumers to sign up for updates from retailers regarding future stock.
