What’re You Going to Do? Boycott it?
Timed exclusives on the Epic Games Store are becoming more common. The first high-profile games to do this were Metro Exodus and Borderlands 3, leading Steam users to review bomb the franchises’ previous installments. In both cases, fans threatened a boycott of the games, but is that really going to be the standard response to timed exclusives? Fans will tire themselves out. IO Interactive’s Hitman 3 has been recently revealed and is confirmed to also be a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store. This was snuck in at the end of a developer blog announcing the Dartmoor location.
Most of the blog focuses on the Dartmoor location and what kind of tasks will be taken on by Agent 47. However, concerning the purchase of the game, there are some interesting things to note. First off, the Epic Games Store timed exclusivity. IO Interactive says “you’ll be able to play HITMAN 3 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC, where the game will be available exclusively via Epic Games Store for 12 month.” Woof. That’s a big blow to Steam users who are adamant on stay off Epic Games Store, but who also want to play Hitman 3.
If you played the previous Hitman games on Steam, you won’t be left completely in the dark. IO Interactive says “PC players will be able to carryover their current progression and unlocks from HITMAN 2 on Steam into HITMAN 3 on Epic Games Store. It will also be possible for PC players to import locations from the previous two games into HITMAN 3 on Epic Games Store.” So, is this a new game or a really big expansion? That’s a conversation for another time. Hitman 3 will be coming out in January 2021 for PC, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
