Time Travelers Can’t Celebrate Events in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nintendo has discovered a unique way to mess with people who time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by making events such as Easter and Toy Day require an online connection. This may be intended to prevent spoilers from leaking ahead of time or it may be designed to prevent people from collection tons of materials that they shouldn’t have yet, but either way we consider it a win for Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch now, with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription required for visiting your friends.
Players who adjust their clock in Animal Crossing has been a thing since the original incarnation on the GameCube but New Horizons aims to discourage people from doing it with techniques like the online requirement for events. This online connection will require a Nintendo Switch Online account, so players who want to explore the holidays will be required to subscribe. New Horizons’ first event is Easter and it will run from April 1st until April 12th.
Locking events behind an online connection is one of Nintendo’s many tactics to prevent time traveling in Animal Crossing, with the company disabling the cloud save feature which is available on most of the online Nintendo titles. The first update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons released before the game even did, giving early adopters an in-game Nintendo Switch to place somewhere in their island or tent. True Animal Crossing fans who got their hands on a special edition Switch console will have an in-game Nintendo Switch that reflects their Animal Crossing Switch.
