Blizzard Owns All Warcraft 3: Reforged Custom Games

Blizzard Copyright Protected Warcraft 3: Reforged Custom Games

In an effort to protect themselves from another Defense of the Ancients situation, Blizzard has copyright protected the custom games in Warcraft 3: Reforged. Defense of the Ancients sparked MOBA titles such as Dota 2 and League of Legends which are played today but Blizzard will be preventing such custom games in Warcraft 3: Reforged. A large part of Blizzard’s policy regarding the Warcraft 3: Reforged custom games details how all ownership of custom games in Reforged belongs to Blizzard and not the creators of the games.Warcraft 3: Reforged is officially available on Mac and PC now.

Warcraft 3 Blizzard

Any Warcraft 3: Reforged custom games that use copyright material from third parties are banned, so custom games like DBZ Tribute, Anime Fight and Pimp My Mario can’t be remade either. Blizzard can do whatever it wants with the custom games, including fully removing them if the content is deemed inappropriate by their standards, which has become a standard in the industry since the release of the original Warcraft 3.

Because of Blizzard’s instant and total copyright ownership of all custom games, any custom game made in Warcraft 3: Reforged cannot be replicated anywhere else. This is a direct attack on the community that crafted the Defense of the Ancients mode during the prime of Warcraft 3. Blizzard has the ability to shut down any standalone versions of custom games made in Reforged, making it impossible to create a new mode that gains momentum.

With this new policy, if the next Dota is made inside Warcraft 3: Reforged, Blizzard would have full ownership of it and any profits it accumulates, but they haven’t specified whether they would choose to shut it down or profit off of it if that day comes.
