Kojima’s Death Stranding – Hideo Doesn’t Understand His Own Game

To Be Fair, No One Else Does Either

The legendary Hideo Kojima, who is most famously known for his creation of the Metal Gear series, is awaiting the release of his new game Death Stranding. Of course, everyone knows about Death Stranding, and yet, no one knows about it. The thing about Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is that understanding eludes even the man himself. Speaking to Financial Times, Kojima stated so. “Death Stranding… even now, I don’t understand the game.”

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding

I kind of liken Hideo Kojima to a mad scientist in a monster movie. He is very accomplished and passionate about his creations. Then he tries to outdo himself and the townsfolk say, “You’re crazy! It can’t be done!” and then Dr. Kojima says, “I must! Science (video games) demands it!” Then his creation overwhelms him and by the time he realizes it, it’s too late. But of course, I generalize here. Kojima is an artist at heart and it is in his nature to explore the new and unfamiliar, which he certainly seems to be doing.

“Its world view, gameplay, they are all new. My mission is to create a genre that does not currently exist, and which takes everyone by surprise. There is, naturally, a risk in that…” Kojima tells Financial Times. The latest trailer for Death Stranding revealed at Gamescom 2019, depicts an invisible baby, apparently born in the afterlife, tethered to its mother in the world of the living, and Norman Reedus is confused. That last part isn’t so far-fetched, as we all are confused. Hideo Kojima may not be a scientist, but he is a mad lad, and we salute him for it. Death Stranding comes out on November 8th on PS4.
