Switch Homebrew Modding Makes Overwatch Portable

The Switchroot Team has released the first Android ROM for Nintendo Switch Homebrew

The team at Switchroot with help from LineageOS Tegra utilizes the Switch’s touch screen functionality in a unique way by introducing the Android software, giving the Switch Homebrew community access to far more apps. The Android ROM allows Switch gamers to play certain PC games through services such as Moonlight, Steam Link, GeForce NOW and NVIDIA GameStream which gives you access to a number of games that haven’t been ported to the Nintendo Switch yet. Downloads for the Android ROM Switchroot are available now on the Switchroot website.

Switch Homebrew

The new addition of Android to the Switch Homebrew community gives gamers access to long-awaited apps such as Netflix, allowing them to watch their favorite films and television shows at home or on the go. Though the Android ROM for the Nintendo Switch adds a lot to its functionality, apparently it still has a number of bugs the team at Switchroot is trying to iron out. The games running on the Nintendo Switch Homebrew using the Android ROM so far include Overwatch, Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto 5. The Switch Joycon also help with navigation through the Android ROM but some of the downloadable apps don’t recognize the input from the Joycon correctly.  One of the significant issues with running games like Overwatch or Grand Theft Auto 5 on your Switch is the battery will be drained significantly quicker than it does playing games that run natively on the Switch.

Despite fans rejoicing at the ability to watch Netflix on their Switch, they’ll be quickly disappointed when the unrecognized device only produces 540p resolution. The idea of running phone software on the Nintendo Switch is certainly interesting but we want to know whether or not you’ve been modding your Switch? If not, what games are you dying to see Nintendo port to their hybrid console? Let us know in the comments below.
