Epic Is Fronting the Bill for Shenmue 3’s PC Kickstarter Refunds
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced Tuesday that Epic is “funding the cost of all Kickstarter refunds resulting from Shenmue III’s move to the Epic Games store”.
“Epic is funding the cost of all Kickstarter refunds resulting from Shenmue III’s move to the Epic Games store, so that refunds won’t reduce Ys Net’s development funding,” Sweeney tweeted. “When future games go Epic-exclusive after offering crowdfunding rewards on other PC stores, we’ll either coordinate with colleagues at the other stores to ensure key availability in advance, or guarantee refunds at announcement time.”
Shenmue 3 ditched Steam for the Epic Games Store in June and this decision resulted in a lot of backlash against Epic, the developer Ys Net, and the publisher Deep Silver. As a result of all this criticism, Kickstarter refunds for the PC version of Shenmue 3 were announced as an option on Tuesday. More details about the refund process will be announced at a later date.
What do you think of this news? Do you agree with Epic’s decision to pay for the Kickstarter refunds? If you’re a Kickstarter backer for the PC version of Shenmue 3 then has this timed Epic exclusivity deal made you want to get a refund?
