Square Enix President Explains Why the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Is Episodic

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is releasing episodically on PS4 and according to Square Enix president & CEO Yosuke Matsuda, this was a decision that was made by the developer team.

According to Game Informer, Matsuda left “a lot” of the decision-making for the game up to the developers.

“Of course, the development team would have had a variety of discussions about how they should go about taking such a famous game as a Final Fantasy VII and remaking that for modern day,” Matsuda explained. “I believe that this style of releasing it like this is something that was born of those discussions.”

“But it is true that each of the individual games will be released as independent games,” he continued. “That’s how the development team is making them. And so for that reason, I’d like for you to think of them as something you can play as standalone and itself contains a game and I think that they will be worth playing in that way.”

The first part of the remake launches on March 3rd, 2020 on PS4. Matsuda has said that the remake will be playable on both PS4 and the next PlayStation console.
