Gears 5 Ditches Season Pass for Free Updates and Microtransactions

Gearing Up For the Endgame

In a recent dev blog, The Coalition explained how they plan to handle Gears 5โ€™s post-launch content, which will not include a season pass or the Gear Packs from the last entry in the series.

The developer revealed that all post-launch maps released will be free to all players, and made a point to strongly iterate that there will be no loot boxes of any sort (or as some would call them, โ€œsurprise mechanicsโ€). However, the game will still include a premium currency called Iron, which players can use to buy in-game cosmetics. There will also be something called โ€˜Supply Drops,โ€™ which work similar to loot boxes, but are only earned through play and canโ€™t be purchased with real money.

One thing that can be bought with real money though is timed boosts for multiplayer XP, character XP, and supply drop progression.

Gears of War 5

Gears 5 will also be introducing something called Tour of Duty, which is basically a battle pass. Players will be given daily challenges and โ€œseasonal medalsโ€ that unlock customization content including character skins. Much like a battle pass, itโ€™ll have โ€œseasons,โ€ and there will be no premium paid content in it.

The Coalition dropped a whole three new trailers for Gears 5 at E3 last week and we recently got an update on the upcoming Gears of War movie. Gears 5 drops on September 10th for PC and Xbox One. Let us know what you think in the comments!
