Will We See Competing Streams?
Yesterday was a big day for Google and the gaming industry, the day another tech company entered the competition. Unlike past reveals, however, Google unveiled a 4K streaming service in Google Stadia that lets players game on any device available. The hefty promise is that there will be no latency issues. Following the keynote, Xbox’s Phil Spencer sent out a company-wide email with an interesting message.
The competition just became stiff, but Spencer didn’t note anything groundbreaking in Google Stadia. Integration with YouTube is impressive, as is the service’s alleged performance, but the concept has been around. “Their announcement is a validation of the path we embarked on two years ago,” said Spencer, referring to Microsoft’s long-awaited Project xCloud.
“Today we saw a big tech competitor enter the gaming market, and frame the necessary ingredients for success as Content, Community and Cloud. There were no big surprises in their announcement although I was impressed by their leveraging of YouTube, the use of Google Assistant and the new WiFi controller.”
Xbox now has two months to prepare their response to Google Stadia, at E3 2019. There, we may see the projects Microsoft has been cooking up, such as Project xCloud, the new “All-Digital” Xbox One, and some first-party exclusives. Google didn’t say very much about the release date or pricing for their new service, only that it will arrive in 2019. If Microsoft brings anything comparable for the right price, this year, we’ll be looking at stiff competition indeed.
“But I want get back to us, there has been really good work to get us to the position where we are poised to compete for 2 billion gamers across the planet. Google went big today and we have a couple of months until E3 when we will go big.”
