Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds Is Coming in 2019
The original creators of Fallout are creating a new single-player shooter-RPG with Obsidian Entertainment, the studio that made Fallout: New Vegas. The Outer Worlds is set for release next year and looks like New Vegas if it took place in space.
Although the game was teased last week, it was officially announced yesterday at The Game Awards along with a two-minute trailer that showcases the gameplay, which is a first-person shooter with RPG elements. The setting is a dystopian universe where entire planets are ruled by huge corporations.
Private Division, a new label started by Take-Two, is handling publishing. The label was started to focus on medium-budget games that fit nicely between AAA games like New Vegas and indie games like Pillars of Eternity. And even though Microsoft now owns Obsidian, they have agreed to honor their original contract with Private Division, so it won’t be an Xbox exclusive.
“As one of the industry’s premiere RPG developers, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realize their creative ambitions,” Microsoft Studios head Matt Booty said of the acquisition.
The Outer Worlds is set for release sometime in 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
