Microsoft Acquires inXile Entertainment and Obsidian

Xbox Is Getting Some RPG Heavyweights

Microsoft just announced their acquisition of inXile Entertainment and Obsidian—two of the industry’s RPG heavyweights—at the company’s X018 event. The former recently made Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2 on Xbox, while the latter is known for Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and the Pillars of Eternity series.

In terms of upcoming games, inXile Entertainment is working on Wasteland 3, and Obsidian is working on porting the recently released Pillars of Eternity II to other platforms outside of PC.

” … inXile will have the support and freedom to fully realize its creative ambitions on both existing franchises and new projects,” Microsoft Studios head Matt Booty said. “The studio will continue to operate autonomously and bring its unique talents, IP and expertise to Microsoft Studios as they build new RPG experiences for our players and fans.”

Speaking on the Obsidian acquisition Booty said the following:

“As one of the industry’s premiere RPG developers, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realize their creative ambitions.”
