PSN Name Changes Sound Extremely Risky

Players Could Lose Tons of Paid Content

Sony recently announced that PSN ID changes will finally be making their debut in early 2019, but new details suggest the process may be more risky than its worth.

Sony noted that โ€œnot all games and applications for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain gamesโ€ in the original announcement but according to users in the programโ€™s beta, an extra disclaimer warns that players could lose DLC purchases and saved games.

The new disclaimer was posted on ResetEra and claims that players may also lose access to virtual currency (like V-Bucks), saved data, leaderboard data, and progress toward trophies. Additionally, the disclaimer says that โ€œparts of your games and applications might not function properly, both online and offline, and that โ€œyour previous Online ID(s) may remain visible to you and other players in some places. โ€

In the original announcement, Sony also promised that a list of โ€œcompatible gamesโ€ would be made available before the feature goes live next year.

Sonyโ€™s had a bit of a rough year as a brand โ€“ aside from the success of God of War and Spider-Man, the company has been floundering on the topic of cross-play, which all of its competitors have adopted long ago, and only recently put the feature โ€œin betaโ€ for everyoneโ€™s favorite Fortnite. On top of that, the company has decided to forego their annual PlayStation Experience event in December, and PS+ subscribers took a hit over the summer.
