Planned Tomb Raider Remasters Are Cancelled, Says Developer

With No Explanation, the Developer Behind the Remasters Cancelled the Project

Update (12:56 PM): A Square Enix spokesperson said to COGconnected that development was cancelled because the remasters “were initiated and advertised without seeking approval.”

“As such, they were never officially sanctioned,” the spokesperon continued. “Ensuring fans receive high quality gaming experiences is at the heart of our mission as a company, which requires all projects to go through proper channels.”

The remasters for the PC versions of the first three Tomb Raider games are no longer happening, announced the developer behind the project, Realtech VR.

“After this episode, we are refocusing on new projects involving Augmented Reality on iOS and VR on PC. We are not more committed on third party license anymore,” Realtech VR tweeted on Wednesday.

COGconnected sent Realtech VR a request for a statement about all this and a spokesperson for Realtech VR got back to us.

“Sorry to no replying about the reason of the cancellation of this mod project, but due to the legal procedures against our company, we are unable to discuss on that matter,” said Vincent Black of Realtech VR. “We don’t have any business with Square Enix anymore.”

This sudden cancellation is a surprising one considering that the developer had announced the remaster project earlier this month. They also apparently deleted a tweet that announced the project’s cancellation and their videos about the remasters are reportedly no longer online.

It should be noted that Realtech VR has dealt with the Tomb Raider franchise before. They had previously developed the mobile ports of the first two Tomb Raider games and the planned PC remasters were supposed to be based off those ports.

The remasters themselves were planned to run in 1080p and run at 60 FPS.

So, what’s your reaction to all this? Are you disappointed that the project has been cancelled? Does this make you want to revisit the old Tomb Raider games and play through them again for old times sake? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!
