The Legends Are True – Bill & Ted 3 is Coming
Nearly 30 years ago, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter started their awesome time-traveling journey, and indelibly etched themselves into the pop-culture consciousness of Gen-X-ers everywhere. Yes, folks, watching 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Adventure, we all became men and women.
Over the ensuing years, talk of sequels has flared up, dimmed, and slowly passed into the realm of folk legend among cold, huddled pocket of devoted fans, who long of a day in some distant future, where the Wild Stallions will reign once more.
And now, finally some fragments of hope: Reeves, 53, and Winter, 52, say they are closer than ever to making a third film with a script titled ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music,’ and it’s from original screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Gods be praised.
According to USA Today, ‘Face the Music’s story would start from the end of ‘Excellent Adventure,’ when the pair’s mentor Rufus (George Carlin) told the duo that they would write music that would turn the world into a utopia. As we’ve all are very much aware, this prophecy has not come to pass yet.
“You’re told you’re gonna save the world,” Matheson said. “And now you’re 50 and you haven’t done it. Now they’re married, and it affects their marriages, and it affects their relationships with their kids, and it affects their everything.”
“Everybody’s a little older now,” said Reeves. “A little afraid.”
“There’s certain comparisons,” said Winter. “A rock band that never goes to the place it thought it was going to get to. Having that moment in their life of going: ‘Do we try to get there, or give up the dream?’
And your inner nostalgia geek will be happy to know that Bill Sadler will indeed return as Death, along with “a few delicious cameos by people to be named another time,” said Solomon. We have no idea who these ‘cameos’ might be, but we can’t wait to find out.
With producers such as Steven Soderbergh attached, financing should not be an issue. But regardless, we’ll likely hear news by next month. Please, please, PLEASE, somebody make sure that this happens. I will start a Go Fund Me page myself if that’s what it takes.
As for Keanu Reeves, he is hopeful for the Bill & Ted 3 project in the most lovable, Keanu Reeves sort of way. “I love the characters so much,” said Reeves, noting the original film’s underlying message. “You can’t go wrong with: ‘Be excellent to each other.’ And: ‘Party on!’ I mean, it might actually be the beginning, one of the first examples of contemporary modern apocalyptic art.”
We will keep you apprised of any Bill & Ted 3 news as we hear it, we promise dude! In the meantime, be excellent to each other and pray – pray to whatever god you pray to, but just give this project all the good vibes it can possibly have.
