Atari VCS Hopefully Showing Off Some Games At GDC
Are you hyped as hell about the upcoming Atari system? No? Well, maybe that spiffy new name will help rev your engines. The Atari VCS, formerly known as the Ataribox, will be shown off at this year’s GDC in San Francisco. Who knows, maybe they’ll even show off a game or two?
Okay, so hype is not exactly at a fever pitch at present. All of the press releases and news that have trickled out of Atari headquarters have not been especially encouraging. Rather than show off anything like games or hardware specs or anything else that would alleviate concern and generate hype, we’ve gotten a lot of buzzwords and nostalgia. The trouble is, Atari’s been coasting off their old games for decades, now. You gotta bring us something new!
As far as the actual system goes, the new concept art and name suggest that new games are maybe not first and foremost in the company’s thoughts going forward. The system design is reminiscent of the 2600, while the name stands for Video Computer System. Sort of makes you think of gaming in the late 70’s. For now, all we’ve got to go on are the slick concept photos and a hot new logo. Here’s hoping their presentation at the GDC yields something new and exciting for the venerable gaming institution.
