Bethesda Just Added Motion Controls to DOOM on Switch

New DOOM Update Adds Fan-Requested Feature and (Maybe) Better Performance

DOOM for the Nintendo Switch was quietly updated overnight and it appears that motion controls have been added to the game as a new feature.

A number of reports from fans show that the latest patch (ver. 1.1.1) added an option for “motion aiming” in the game’s controller settings. Sub-options for inverted motion controls and sensitivity have also been added.

The implementation of motion controls in DOOM comes as a surprise considering Bethesda has made zero mention of it despite fans requesting it ever since the game launched last November.

Some players are also reporting that the patch improves frame rate and resolution, but we haven’t been able to confirm anything yet. One of the criticisms of the Switch version of DOOM was that it lacked some of the sheen and polish of the other console versions. Compared to its PS4 and Xbox One brothers, the Switch version ran at 30 frames per second at a 720p resolution in docked and undocked modes. Despite this technical limitation, many people still thought it was a fair tradeoff for being able to take the game on the go.

Here’s what we said about DOOM on Switch in our launch review:

“But despite some shortcuts and downgrades in shoehorning a huge FPS juggernaut onto a handheld, Doom on the Switch is the real deal. All of the action, all of the fun, and most of the gameplay are in your hands, in a port that definitely fulfills its massive expectations. And let’s not forget that what you give up in the Switch version is counterbalanced by what you get: the ability to take this classic action title anywhere with you, on a fully-portable platform. I spent last weekend playing Doom while waiting for the bus, and that’s something I thought I would never say.”
