A source has reportedly told TechRadar that work on Grand Theft Auto VI has already begun. This shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, since it has been two years since Grand Theft Auto V. However, it is the first confirmation we have that the next installment of the massively-popular franchise is indeed in development.
There is apparently no location yet chosen for the new GTA game, according to the report. And no, it will not be in Tokyo, according to the source, although Rockstar did visit that city with the idea of locating the next game there. They ultimately decided against it.
The new game would very likely use a new game engine, though. That speculation comes from a 2012 report that Rockstar had advertised for a new job working on engine development for next-gen systems. In the words of the advert, “this is an exciting opportunity to develop cutting-edge architectures and high performance systems for current and next-gen platforms,” which strongly implies that the studio is creating a new engine, and GTA VI would likely use it.
