The 3 Best and 3 Worst Video Games From January 2017

3 Up, 3 Down – The Best (And Worst) Games From January 2017

Who has money this time of year? I know I don’t. I understand, you’re broke and still paying off the glut of Christmas presents you purchased. The last thing you want to do right now is drop serious cash on some new games. It’s a good thing January is typically a slow month for game releases, so if you are a frugal gamer like me this time of year never kills you in the pocketbook. January 2017; however, did see a few big releases including a Resident Evil game, and a new Yakuza game. January wasn’t a slow month for us at COGconnected either as we reviewed over 25 games. There were a lot of mediocre scores but a few games rose from the pack. So let’s take a look at the best (3 Up) and worst games (3 Down) from the past month as we kick off 2017 in style.

The Best

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

It’s not every month a 3DS game makes our best of the month list but it just so happens this month we have one. Between the voice-acting, enhanced side-quests, and quality of the gameplay itself, Dragon Quest VIII shows that the 3Ds still has at least one more amazing game. Dragon Quest VIII itself is a standout in an already highly regarded series, but this enhanced edition is the definitive version to play. If you are still hanging on to your 3DS, this one is worth a serious look.

Dragon Quest VIII Hero

Yakuza 0

Going in, we knew the next installment in the Yakuza series would be good, but we didn’t expect it to be this good. Yakuza 0 is a game that not only returning fans can enjoy but newcomers can jump right in and not feel lost at all. With such a dynamic and interactive interface, Yakuza 0 will keep you coming back for more and even catch you off guard when you least expect. It’s a game everyone should experience or at least try out. It’s our top game from the past month, hands down.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Granted, we didn’t dish out an amazing review score for Resident Evil 7 biohazard. In fact, many games edged out RE7 when it came to our reviews from the past month. Yet there is no denying Resident Evil 7 does exactly what it intends to do and that is scare the bejeesus out of you. After a few stinkers from the franchise, it is great to see the series relevant again and Capcom did just that with this entry. Resident Evil is back, and that makes us happy. So for that reason, it gets the nod as one of the best from the previous month.
