The Big 5 – The Five Biggest Games of July 2016

Song of the Deep – Insomniac Games – July 12 (Multiplatform)

Song of the Deep marks Gamestop’s first foray into the world of video game publishing. Love them or hate them they are doing their best to adapt to the changing landscape of the gaming market. A mere five bucks off a used copy of a game might not keep the company going strong for the upcoming digital age so they decided to partner with well-known developer Insomniac Games for Song of the Deep. A metroidvania-style action-adventure game it follows a young girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father. Combining discovery, skill, and suspense with an unforgettable narrative, this underwater journey will challenge players to explore, experiment, and skillfully navigate a vast ocean landscape. Dropping onto the PC, PS4 and Xbox One on July 12, we’ll get to see what this partnership brings to the table.

Ghostbusters – Activision – July 12 (Multiplatform)

The jury is still out on the upcoming reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise (although many people seem to have made up their minds already), but regardless of how the movie is you can look forward to a new game from the franchise as well on July 12. Taking place after the events of the upcoming feature film, Ghostbusters is a 4-player co-op action game that has seen very little information come out apart from its reveal trailer. With less than two weeks to the game’s release, it doesn’t necessarily bode well for the game’s quality that we haven’t seen a little bit more. Still, just like we haven’t seen the movie, we also haven’t played the game so the jury is still out and we’ll be keeping an eye on it… because Ghostbusters.

I Am Setsuna – Square Enix – July 19 (PS4/PC)

If we had to pick one game we’re probably the most excited about in this month’s Big 5 it would hands down be the stunning looking I Am Setsuna. A throwback to JRPGs classics of yesterday, this Chrono Trigger inspired (yeah, you’ve got us sucked in now) beauty releases on July 19 to the PS4 and to Steam. Boasting an Active Time Battle system reminiscent of games like the aforementioned Chrono Trigger and early Final Fantasy, the story is set in a land gripped by perpetual winter and follows a mercenary and his charge, a maiden named Setsuna who must offer herself as a sacrifice at a sacred shrine to appease hostile demons. Beautifully rendered and dripping with nostalgia this is a game that JRPG fans are super excited for.
