Game of the Year Awards 2019: Best Art Design

Having an epic hero to quest through the world and defeat the big bad guy is important, as well as having a cohesive and interesting story to tell, but if your intrepid adventurer is bumbling through a bland and flat landscape there really isn’t much of a game going on, is there? Art Design is best summed up as that feeling when you enter a location in a game and feel the need to stop and slowly pan the camera for cinematic effect, to really take in the finer details of the environment around you. This doesn’t mean realism, but a setting that is so well defined it could be its own definitive character in a game. Here are the nominees for best Art Design.

Whether walking across the barren plains of a cursed world, hopping from planet to planet, or defying all logic of space and time, these games all share one key feature an incredibly passionate and dedicated team of developers who strived – and succeeded – to give the world a truly memorable experience exploring their unique universe. These games are without a doubt iconic adventures that we will be talking about for years to come.
