LucidSound LS35X Headset Review – Game Changer in More Ways Than One

LucidSound LS35X Headset Review

Video games are an immersive experience, but as graphics and finer details become more and more acute we also need to refine our hardware to capture each and every detail to maintain that immersion. Gaming headsets have been on the rise for a number of years, offering gamers sensational audio immersion and surround sound quality that you simply can’t get from that TV sitting across from you. Whether wandering through the woods and hearing the distant call of a chickadee or the eerie footsteps from behind, audio is every bit an important aspect of video game immersion as its visual counterpart. LucidSound has been a defining name in gaming quality, climbing up the ranks to compete against some of the most recognizable names in the business, and the LS35X model built for the Xbox One and PC is a game-changer in more ways than one.

As soon as the headset was in my hands I knew this was going to be a high-quality experience. I was hesitant about the quality a wireless gaming headset could offer but everything LucidSound has promised here they truly delivered. The headset will sync to the console using the same tech as the Xbox controller, which not only means a simple and strong connection, but you can even turn on the console using the headset itself. With no cord to speak of, the LS35X instead follows the company’s innovative pattern and builds all the necessary controls into the outside of the earcups themselves instead of having a bulky dongle or audio controller.

The center of the left earcup is one large button to pause all audio, surrounded by a discreet wheel to control the volume. The right earcup is the mute and unmute control for multiplayer chat with its wheel controlling the chat volume. This simple control scheme is not only natural but quite intuitive, and much easier to adjust on the fly then feeling around for a dongle hanging from your face. What is even more impressive is that even at maximum volume there is no distortion, no audio tearing, nothing. The LS35X transfers crystal clear sound at all times.

Innovative. Intuitive. Comfortable.

Of course, I have to admit that when I drop a headset in place I know I am gearing up for the long haul, so how well does this thing really hold up under extensive playtime? The truth is I often forgot anything was resting on my noggin at all. The LS35X sports a surprisingly light frame that not only has quite the plush cushioning for resting on the top of your head, but a heat and sweat-resistant, gel cooled extra plush material that makes up the oversized earcups. This means that not only did I not feel warm, sweaty, or gross, but that my entire ear fit nicely within the cup so I didn’t feel it pressing against the side of my head. While it fits comfortably, the only downside to the LS35X design comes from laying down to watch movies; it can be hard to enjoy a film when the volume and mute controls are up against your ear while you lie down on a pillow.

The headset does also come with a 3.5mm cable for other mediums and I am happy to say that using it for my other gaming needs still delivers the crisp quality I constantly experienced. In fact, the quality, versatility, and comfort of the headset has made this my new favorite, not to mention its dual microphone capabilities. The headset features a detachable boom mic for gaming, but when removed it also features an integrated mic in the earcup itself. Plugging the 3.5mm cable into your smartphone means you can now use the built-in mic for calls or gaming if you simply aren’t a fan of having a boom in front of your face (although I do suggest using the boom as a more reliable mic for gaming.)

A Game Changer

With an impressive 15-hour battery life, the LucidSound LS35X is a wireless gaming headset I am not ashamed to say has become my favorite gaming accessory. Having high quality, crystal clear audio with no lag, no skipping, no tearing, and no cord has been fantastic. The innovative control scheme that blends stylishly into the design of the headset feels natural and intuitive for quick adjustments on the fly, and offering both the built-in and boom mic options are a huge bonus in the way of versatility. Packaging the headset with the 3.5mm cable opens up its use for any device with a standard audio jack, and regardless of what you use this headset for, it consistently delivers flawless audio. With a lightweight design and extra plush, gel-cooled earcups, any company looking to put out next-gen gaming headsets now has a seriously high bar to compete with.
