Atlas 200 Headset Review – Punching Well Above Its Price

Atlas 200 Headset Review

The Atlas 200 is the first officially licensed headset designed specifically for PlayStation. As a brand long trusted by gamers worldwide, expectations are high for the Atlas 200 wired gaming headset. The Atlas 200 promises premium audio, and the kind of comfort that can withstand marathon gaming sessions. But does it live up to the hype, or is this just a cautious first step into the licensed world of Sony? Let’s dive in.

The off-white, light grey Atlas 200 makes a strong first impression right out of the box. It has a sleek, understated design that fits right in with the PS5’s aesthetic. There are 2 small bits of blue, featuring the PlayStation logo, that allow for adjustments to the headband. This flexible headband and sturdy frame strike a nice balance between comfort and durability. This headband doesn’t include any plush cushion, and instead opts for a resistance band design. Both this, and the frame, offer a snug, yet forgiving, fit that holds up during long sessions.

Plush & Comfortable Design

The large memory foam ear cushions are where the comfort really comes through. Not only are they plush and breathable, but they have been thoughtfully crafted with glasses-wearing gamers in mind. This is where the patented ProSpecs technology shines as it’s set to reduce pressure points for all-day comfort and it delivers in strides. Overall, while the Atlas 200 doesn’t quite have the premium feel of higher-end models, it still comes across as solidly built and dependable, clearly made to withstand the wear and tear of daily gaming.

After putting the headset on, you’ll immediately notice some noise-cancellation happening as well. And that’s without any kind of game noise to assist! I’ve become so used to headsets that offer customizable sound options, whether on the headset or through additional software. The Atlas 200 has none of that. There’s a single volume dial on the left earphone. And yet, despite the simplicity, the Atlas 200 still delivers immersive audio.

Equipped with precision-tuned 50mm Nanoclear drivers, this wired headset offers rich, detailed sound that brings your games to life. Whether you’re tracking enemy footsteps on Battlefield or Call of Duty, or getting lost in sweeping cinematic soundscapes of an open-world RPG, you’ll hear it all really well. The Atlas 200 is fully optimized for Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech on the PlayStation 5, which allows an enhancement of direction and depth of sound in-game. And the PS5 also allows for the split audio for chat communication and in-game audio. Both are crisp and balanced. Adjust this however you want on the PlayStation 5 and you’re set.

Not Entirely Perfect Sound Design

Well, almost. While the sound is crisp and balanced, it’s not perfect. There’s a lack of bass with the Atlas 200 which means some of the in-game sound is a little off. This could have been adjusted easily with another sound dial on the earphones or some sort of EQ button. The uni-directional, flip to mute microphone is easy to use and allows for quick muting whenever you need it, without a press of a button. Despite this, there’s some background noise that comes through on the mic. It doesn’t suppress noise as well as it should in all situations and some of my friends have been able to note my cats meowing in the background. This is the first mic that my cats in the background have been commented on.

The Turtle Beach Atlas 200 keeps things refreshingly simple, delivering a no-frills design that still nails the essentials of comfort, quality, and performance. Its lightweight build, flexible frame, and memory foam cushions make it easy to wear for hours, while the wired connection means you’ll never have to worry about the battery life. Literally plug and play in the easiest sense possible. Add in the impressively crisp game audio and clear communication, and you’ve got a headset that punches well above its weight. At just $59.99 USD, the Atlas 200 is a perfect choice for PlayStation and PC players alike, focusing on dependable performance without the premium price tag. And in this economy, we can all use more of that!
