3. Persona 3 Portable/ Persona 4 Golden – January 19
Persona 3 and 4 are finally getting released on modern consoles. They were both originally released for the PS2. Their remakes added tons of additional content, but have been trapped on Sony portable consoles until now. If you’ve played and loved Persona 5, then these are required playing. Persona 5 is more polished and refined, but Persona 3 has the best story of the franchise. The Persona series really broke away from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, and became something new and special starting with Persona 3. Both games will be available for PS4, Switch, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC. Strangely, there is no PS5 specific version.
2. Forspoken – January 24
Forspoken is a brand new Square-Enix IP, developed by the team that made Final Fantasy XV, minus the madcap direction of Tetsuya Nomura. Though it’s an action JRPG, it really doesn’t look like one. It features an open world, with magical parkour traversal. It was one of the early announcements, designed specifically to take advantage of the PS5’s capabilities. There were lots of Square-Enix releases in 2022, but few triple-A ones. Forspoken is going to be a massive indicator if Square-Enix still has the creative juices for new triple-A franchises. Forspoken is exclusive to PS5 and PC.
1. Fire Emblem Engage – January 20
Fire Emblem Engage is the first mainline Fire Emblem game in three years. It promises to be more of the same tactical JRPG gameplay that franchise fans know and love. There is a new mechanic called emblem rings, which allows players to fight with characters from previous games in the franchise. Although the wheel doesn’t look like it’s going to be reinvented, there’s no doubt that a new Fire Emblem game tops The Top 5 Video Games Arriving in January 2023. Fire Emblem Engage is a Switch exclusive.
