Top 10 Free-To-Play Games
With Christmas behind us and a long list of email receipts in our inboxes, I personally thought it was time for me to get my gaming fix without needing to sell my last kidney. In this age of loot boxes and games being locked behind a paywall, we need to remember that there are still free-to-play games out there that aren’t trying to bleed us all dry. The list below is my recommendations for free-to-play games that have been eating up my free time over the past year, without making any kind of sizeable dent in my wallet.
Dwarf Fortress
Though Dwarf Fortress has been in the game for a while now, it still manages to be one of my favourite free-to-play games to date. If somehow you haven’t heard of it, don’t be put off by the art-style; what it lacks for in flashy graphics it makes up for in gameplay. Simply put: Dwarf Fortress is an insanely detailed, procedurally generated base-building, survival game where the only limit may very well be your imagination; see, the infamous merfolk genocide. With a learning curve that may break your sanity and gameplay that will keep you coming back, Dwarf Fortress is entirely worth the endless tutorial videos you’ll end up watching. Dota 2
A game I’m sure you’ve all heard of, DOTA 2 has been around long enough to repeatedly destroy my social life for a few years now, and is still one of the games I find myself crawling back to every now and then. It’s the basic MOBA concept of pushing lanes, getting last hits, and flaming your teammates. If you haven’t already tried it out, I’d heartily recommend it. Action packed, addictive, and one of the few MOBAs that have all heroes unlocked from the get-go, there’s a reason DOTA 2 has been one of the reigning MOBAs for some time now.
War Thunder
A game that chucks you in the centre of a dogfight, or in the centre of a battlefield would struggle to be boring, and War Thunder has the high-octane gameplay down to a T. With gameplay that is silky smooth, and combat that sucks you in from the get-go, it offers up hours of intense fun. It does also offer up hours of grinding to unlock the more advanced tech, but you can still have a blast with what you can easily unlock.
