The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2023

The Bad

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is one of the worst games COGconnected has reviewed in years. As it currently exists, it’s basically unplayable. But even if it ran well, the gameplay is quite bland. And the story about Gollum’s POV during the events of the Second Age adds nothing interesting to Tolkien’s original material. At the end of the day, our reviewer found the game to have “buggy, unpolished, and not very interesting or enjoyable gameplay”, and that is an inexcusable feeling.

Redfall

Redfall got a really good score from our reviewer. But, it was the new game from the studio that made the innovative Dishonored franchise. Redfall was anything but innovative. It’s a well-made first-person shooter with vampires. It just lacks imagination. Our reviewer concluded that “Redfall feels like the product of a reliable game plan that’s due for an update”. But, it’s easily the highest rated of The Bad games in The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2023.

Teslagrad 2

The original Teslagrad was a very beloved puzzle platformer. The sequel fails to capture its innovative magic. Some of the puzzles were cool, and a late game power made it much more fast and fun to play. The biggest issue with Teslagrad 2 is that it’s way too short, being only 2-3 hours long. Our reviewer concluded “I can’t imagine how fans of the original wouldn’t be disappointed by this sequel, and it’s definitely not going to earn the Teslagrad franchise any new fans”.
