The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from December 2023

The Bad

Custom Mech Wars

Custom Mech Wars is 50% great, which unfortunately puts it in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from December 2023. It’s a mech building game, where all of the fun lies in designing and building giant robots. The game struggles when it’s time to use those giant robots. The third person action gameplay is pretty bland. The campaign feels like an afterthought. And, unfortunately, multiplayer wasn’t available for review. Our reviewer concluded “if you’ve got lots of mechs in your heart, begging to be built, you’re in for a good time. Otherwise, I can’t really recommend this game.”

Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection

The Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection is a fantastic collection. It’s a high quality digital archive, that remasters all its games well. Sadly, the 7 games found within have not aged well. Most of them weren’t even received well upon first release. Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo is probably the most well-known. It’s a cryptic, top-down adventure game, with first person shooting gameplay for interior locations. We all loved it, but also knew it wasn’t a good game in the early 90s. Surprisingly, the Game Boy games hold up pretty well. Our reviewer didn’t have a good time replaying these games, and found his “childhood fixation was used as leverage, cracking open the door to let in [a] hodgepodge of mediocre slurry”. The Jurrassic Park Classic Games Collection is an obvious choice for The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from December 2023.

The Racket Club

The Racket Club is a VR sports game that features a sport unique to this game. It combines elements of tennis, pickleball, ping pong, and squash. The reason The Racket Club is in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from December 2023 is because everything about it feels very mid. It’s not incredibly immersive, and it’s light on features, not even having a single player mode. Our reviewer concluded “the game certainly doesn’t make use of PC-VR or the Quest 3’s increased power and fidelity but it’s still a moderately successful iteration of a brand new sport”.
