5. Friendly Neighborhood Sword
Talk to every citizen of Ditto. Not just in the town, but the ones out in the woods or in random huts. Citizens will often ask you to complete quests or even offer you a key to get into a locked caved. Their dialogue can be hilarious and you get big XP boosts for helping the citizens of the land. While it might seem like a no-brainer in an RPG, don’t miss the opportunity because you feel like you haven’t got the time: you are the hero of legend after all!
4. Show Off Those Upgrades
Whether in a chest or as a reward, you’ll come across toy batteries or imbued stones that can power up your toys – USE THEM. As an avid RPG fan, I have a tendency to horde my supplies and money until I really need it down the road. With the compact RPG design of the game, you only have the span of the time limit with your gear so as soon as it is convenient – and at the very least before your final battle – use the power-ups you have. These can add elemental effects, increase damage or range output, and some of them can be stacked. I increased my laser pointer ring’s power to the point I was felling my enemies in two hits. You’ll lose everything if you die, so don’t be afraid to spend!
3. Remember the Rules
The island of Ditto is also known as the Island of Trials. That is because every single dungeon was designed as a trial: a test of the player’s mettle, to see if they could solve the puzzles and stop the bad guys. As such, at the beginning of every cave sits a toilet-looking robot who will read you the rules of the dungeon in question. These are randomly generated and at lower levels will often only be one or two rules, however, the higher level you are the more they stack and the more hazardous it becomes. If you think it’s easy to stay alive in this game you haven’t had dodge rolling disabled, all enemies explode, all enemies do fire damage, and healing items don’t work stacked on top of one another in a 25 room dungeon. While you don’t have a choice in following the rules, it’s important to be mindful as they can also negatively affect the enemy and drastically change your tactics.
2. Relax, It’s an RPG
Does that bush look suspicious? It’s probably hiding something. That one section of wall has a crack that’s different from the others? It probably blows up. Swords of Ditto takes its inspiration from classic titles like the Legend of Zelda so if anything seems like a typical RPG trope, it probably is. Breakable walls hide treasures, caves are hidden throughout the land; just about any typical RPG aspect is going to appear in some way or another. Trust your instincts as you traverse Ditto: If it should work, it probably will.
1. Take Your Sweet Time
While travelling the island of Ditto, the final countdown clock is ticking away as it brings you closer to your doom. However, inside the town, homes, and dungeons the clock is paused. The time spent between the beginning of your journey and the end is entirely about preparing for the final battle: collecting every item you can, defeating every enemy, and leveling up. While some dungeons might only be a few rooms, others can have a few dozen and easily take half an hour to complete. All the while you can cut every blade of grass, kill every enemy, and discover every hidden room. Whenever you find yourself in a cave be sure to drag it out as long as you can to get the most out of your gameplay experience.
